Interview With Liviu – Dieter Nisipeanu, dated October 18, 2005:
Q. I bet you have been interviewed a lot since becoming European champion.
A Yes very much. I think I have been interviewed more times than I have played chess, but it’s ok.
Q. Rumania finished only 16th at the World team championships, why?
A. We were seeded 8th, but our players had very little notice and we had all been very busy with other tournaments, so we were tired and had little preparation.
Q. Rumania beat Denmark 3-1, do you remember the match?
A. Yes, I drew with Peter Heine and was under pressure for most of the game, he is a good player.
Q. What about your preparation for this tournament?
A. I know I have started poorly, and had planned to prepare for two weeks but I became ill so it delayed me somewhat.
Q. You drew today after two loses?
A. Yes, I need to stabilise things, I normally am I bit moody after such a start, but I feel good . I think it is because the accommodation and surroundings are so good.
Q. The weather is also good?
A. Yes, but it’s windy, so it feels colder than back at home. I don’t understand how the Danish people can go around without a jacket on !
Q. How often are you back home?
A. Not often, I travel a lot so it’s nice having the wife with me. She helps my nerves.
Q. Now that your European champion, can we expect many new players from Rumania?
A. I hope I can help the future for chess in Rumania, but there are not many young players, it doesn’t earn enough. During the communist period there were many young players, but there is no financial backing anymore.
Q. What do you think of the new world championship system?
A. It is very complex. It is also very difficult for players like myself to qualify. The older system was better at least everyone had a chance.
Q. What about Kasparov, will we see him again?
A. I think so. He is brilliant and I hope he comes back, but Topalov is a good replacement.
Q. What is the best thing so far?
A. Playing Ivanchuk, he is a real professional , a great guy.
I thank you for time and hope things improve for you.
